This course explains the different types of pavements, namely plain concrete - short pavement slabs, continuously reinforced concrete slabs, reinforced pavement slabs, and steel fibre concrete slabs. This course also describes the placing of concrete through fixed-form concrete paving and slip form concrete paving. Special measures to be adopted, while placing concrete on a slope or during concrete paving in cold and hot/dry weather is also considered. The material is based on Road Pavements of Cement Concrete, Execution of Monolithic Pavements.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will have a better understanding of the design and execution of rigid concrete pavement construction, as well as an understanding of the following topics: 

• Execution of transverse and longitudinal joints
• Placement of dowels or tie bars
• Sealing the transverse and longitudinal joints
• Surface treatment methods such as brooming and exposed aggregate finish
• Concrete protection against drying out rain and frost
